Abstract
PURPOSE: Alumina hydrate, resulting from the reaction between a water-soluble aluminum salt and a carbonate salt, is subjected to hydrothermal treatment, mixed with a monobasic acid and dried to produce a powder of alumina sol with high dispersibility.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble aluminum salt such as aluminum chloride is made to react with carbonic acid or a carbonate salt such as sodium carbonate at 5W35°C. The resultant alumina hydrate is rinsed to remove impurities. Then, the product is hydrothermally treated at 120W250°C, preferably 140W220°C for 0.5W4hr. Further, the alumina hydrate is combined with a monobasic acid such as hydrochloric or acetic acid and dried, or dried, then mixed with the acid. Thus, an alumina sol of high alumina content and high dipersibility or with thixotropy even in a low concentration and high dispersibility is produced.
