Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture high purity alumina by treating an aqueous aluminate soln. obtd. in the manufacture of alumina by the Bayer process with an adsorbent contg. titanium hydroxide to remove contained uranium by adsorption.
CONSTITUTION: Bauxite is treated with an aqueous soln. of caustic soda, and red mud is removed. An adsorbent contg. titanium hydroxide is added to the resulting aqueous soln. of sodium aluminate to allow uranium to be adsorbed on the adsorbent at about 11W13pH, and solid matter is removed to obtain an aqueous soln. of sodium aluminate. α-Alumina is then manufactured from the soln. by an ordinary method by which deposited aluminum hydroxide is calcined. A composite adsorbent obtd. by uniformly sticking titanium hydroxide to the surface of porous γ-Fe2O3 is preferably used as the adsorbent.
