Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain polycrystalline alumina fiber causing no layer exfoliation phenomenon and useful as a fire resistant, heat insulating material for high temp. use by converting a dispersion consisting of water insol. alumino gel, aluminum oxychloride and polyvinyl alcohol into fiber with centrifugal force followed by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Alumino gel or alumino gel and silica hydrogel are dispersed in water, and the dispersion is mixed with aluminum oxychloride with an Al to Cl molar ratio of 1.7W1.9 and a soln. of polyvinyl alcohol with an average polymn. degree of 1500W2000. The alumino gel content is regulated to 20W60% of the total alumina components in the mixed dispersion. This dispersion is concentrated to a viscosity of 500W2000 cps/20°C by being heated at 60W70°C under reduced press. for 1W2 hr. The resulting conc. dispersion is converted into fiber with centrifugal force, and the fiber is heat treated at 500W1200°C to obtain polycrystalline alumina fiber.
