Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce amorphous silica hydrate similar to crystalline calcium silicate hydrate in form by contacting specified crystalline calcium silicate alkalihydrate to a mineral acid.
CONSTITUTION: Not less than 58% SiO2-contg. crystalline calcium silicate alkalihydrate is dipped in an aq. soln. of a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid or nitric acid of pH≤ about 4, pref. about 1.3W3.0 and treated at about 10W100°C for about 30minW3hr to extract the alkali and the calcium. The resulting amorphous silica hydrate is separated, washed with water, and dried. The above alkalihydrate used is in the form of fiber of about 50W300μ length and about 50W200 aspect ratio or of mica of about 5W50μ width and about less than 0.1M thickness.
