Abstract

PURPOSE: Artificial starting materials are used and they are treated in a specific manner to produce a uniformly fine powder of cordierite composition that is converted into cordierite readily by heating.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing a water-soluble magnesium salt such as MgCl3.6H2O, a water-soluble aluminum salt such as AlCl3.6H2O and a fine powder of silicon oxide such as silica sol or silica gel is combined with a water- soluble organic solvent such as methanol or ethylene glycol under stirring. Further, an ammonia-alkaline ammonium carbonate solution is added to the above mixture under stirring and the precipitate formed is separated and dried to give a powder of cordierite composition.
