Abstract

Silica alcosols are prepared by acidifying an aqueous alkali metal silicate to form a silica hydrosol, adding an alcohol to replace the water, salting out the water with an inorganic salt and separating the resultant alcosol layer: thereafter a solution of ethyl silicate in an alcohol is added to produce a refractory-binding solution. If desired only a part of the alcohol need be added before the inorganic salt. As exemplified, the hydrosol is prepared from sodium silicate and sulphuric acid, the alcohol replacing the water is i-propyl alcohol and the salt is sodium chloride. Sodium sulphate is also referred to. The ethyl silicate is in methyl alcohol solution. Specification 841,874 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.ALSO:A binding composition for refractory materials which is converted by heating to silica comprises a silica alcosol prepared by displacing the water in a hydrosol (see Group III) to which is added less than an equal volume of a 70% solution of ethyl silicate in an alcohol. As exemplified, the alcohol replacing the water is i-propyl alcohol and the ethyl silicate is in methyl alcohol solution. Specification 841,874 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
