Abstract

A concentrate for addition to water to produce a fire-extinguishing liquid comprises a suspension of a finely divided, water-thickening polysaccharide derivative (e,g. an alginate or sodium carboxy methyl cellulose) in a non-aqueous, water-miscible suspending liquid, e.g. a glycol, in which the said derivative is insoluble and does not swell by more than 20% of its original volume. A wetting agent may also be present, in which case the material may be used in producing foams. A viscosity-modifier, e.g. an amine salt of a long-chain polycarboxylic acid and a salt which will bring about gelling of an alginate when the material is mixed with water may be included.
