In a process for the depilation of skins and hides using enzyme-free depilation liquors containing amines, chlorine dioxide or chlorites, per compounds either individually or in admixture with chlorites, alkali-metal or alkaline earth metal borates, hydrotropic substances, e.g. propanol, isopropanol or commercial mixtures thereof, are added to the depilation baths. Butanols or their commercial mixtures may also be used as the hydrotropic substances.
