Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Häute oder Felle der Einwirkung von Peressigsäure ausgesetzt und anschließend mit Neutralsalzen oder schwach bis stark alkalisch wirkenden Salzen oder Basen behandelt werden. Zweckmäßigerweise erfolgt diese Nachbehandlung durch Zugabe von (NH4)2So4 oder von NaHCO3, Na3PO4, Na2CO3 oder Na2HPO4. Durch diese Behandlung werden die zähen anoxydierten Haare aufgelöst und lassen sich sehr leicht durch Spülen mit Wasser entfernen.
