Abstract

Animal fibres, e.g. wool, are treated with an aqueous liquor containing sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite to reduce their tendency to felt and shrink. Prior to treatment the animal fibres, which may be in the form of hanks, packages, yarns incorporating animal fibres, fabrics and garments, may be scoured or thoroughly wet out. The animal fibres are preferably immersed in an aqueous bath, the pH of which is adjusted to 4-8 by the addition of formic acid, before the addition thereto of the sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite in that order. A solution of a reducing compound, e.g. sodium bisulphite or sodium hydrosulphite, may be added later to the bath to remove the yellowishbrown colouration produced and to neutralize the residual chlorine. During the treatment the temperature of the bath is preferably raised to 100 DEG -120 DEG F. and the bath and fibres are finally separated, the fibres being then rinsed thoroughly in cold water and dyed. In an example the treatment of all-wool half hose is described.
