Abstract

A stable proteolytic enzyme composition comprises an aqueous solution of a proteolytic enzyme such as bromelin, pepsin, streptokinase and preferably chymotrypsin and especially trypsin, and partially hydrolysed, sterile, pyrogen-free, non-antigenic gelatin, the composition having a pH of from 3.2 to 4.8 preferably 3.6 secured by agents such as hydrochloric, lactic or phosphoric acid, sodium or potassium hydroxide. Preservatives such as methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, cresol, p-chlorocresol and thimerosal may be present. The aqueous solution may be prepared by combining the enzyme per se or in lyophilized form or in aqueous solution with an aqueous solution of gelatin or by adding a mixture in lyophilized form of the enzyme and gelatin to water.
