Abstract

Diazotizable textile fibres are produced by treating cotton fibres, cellulose artificial fibres, or partially acetylated cellulose fibres with a nitrated benzyl halide in the presence of an acid-binding agent (other than caustic alkali) and thereafter reducing the product obtained. Cotton fibres must be rendered reactive before treatment, for example, by swelling with alkali. In examples, moist cuprammonia silk is treated in fused nitrobenzyl chloride containing powdered chalk, washed, and reduced with sodium hydrosulphide; mercerized cotton yarn is immersed in 10 per cent soda lye, washed, treated in an autoclave in the presence of sodium carbonate with a solution of nitrobenzyl chloride in acetone, again washed and reduced as above.
