Abstract
Cotton fibres, cellulose artificial fibres, or partially acetylated fibres are etherified with a homologue of a nitrobenzylhalide or with a chlornitrobenzene derivative (other than an ortho-dinitro-compound) containing halogen in ortho- or para-position to a nitro-group, in presence of an agent which binds acid, other than caustic alkali, and the product thus obtained is reduced. Suitable etherifying agents mentioned are nitroxylyl chloride, ortho-and para-nitrochlorobenzene, 1, chloro- 2, 4, dinitrobenzene or homologues or halogen derivatives of these. In an example, mercerized cotton is swollen in caustic soda lye, washed, and treated in the presence of lithium carbonate with fused 1, chloro-2, 4, dinitrobenzene; the cotton is thereafter washed and reduced.
