Abstract

323,345. Marshall, W. Dec. 12, 1928. Yarns, treating with liquids; yarns, mercerizing. -In mercerizing and similar processes wherein yarns composed of natural celluloses such as cotton, flax, &c. are treated with caustic soda or potash, without the presence of carbon disulphide, there is added to the washing water for the removal of the caustic alkali one or more of the following protecting-agents :-sodium or potassium chloride, sulphate, nitrate, or chlorate, sodium thiosulphate, sucrose, glycerine, or glucose. The addition of the protecting-agent imparts improved softness and lustre to the goods, while the risk of damage on light and fine goods is minimized since there is less contraction during the washing process. The washing may be effected with or without tension and at temperatures up to or above 212‹ F. According to the Provisional Specification, ammonium chloride and sulphate may be used as protecting-agents.
