Abstract

323,346. Marshall, W. Dec. 12, 1928. Yarns, treating with liquids ; yarns, mercerizing. -In mercerizing and similar processes wherein mixed yarns composed of natural celluloses such as cotton, flax, &c., and wood or silk are treated with caustic soda or potash, the caustic alkali is prevented from damaging the animal fibres by adding to the cold washing water one or more of the following protecting-agents :-potassium or sodium chloride, sulphate, nitrate or chlorate, sodium thiosulphate, ammonium chloride or sulphate, sucrose, glycerine or glucose. The addition of the protecting- agent also preserves the normal dyeing properties of the wool or natural silk.
