Abstract
Raw bast fibres in the form of roving on cross wound bobbins are subjected to a chemical treatment to remove non-cellulose matter and to clean them. The material may be pretreated with acid and may be subsequently bleached and dyed. The chemical treatment preferably comprises alternate treatment with acid hypochlorite solution or chlorine water and strong alkali. In an example, raw bast fibres of flax as roving on cross wound bobbins is boiled in dilute caustic soda solution, chlorinated in a solution of hypochlorous acid, rinsed, dechlorinated, boiled in caustic soda solution as before, and again bleached.
