Abstract

321,282. Pollard, A. G., and Whincop, J. R. Sept. 25, 1928. Pulp, preparation of. - Cellulose is prepared from wood and other vegetable fibres by a process comprising saturating the fibres with chlorine gas, steeping in a weak alkaline solution of less than 3 per cent strength, heating, washing, rechlorinating. steeping in a dilute acid'solution, and wash. ing again, the whole process being conducted under cold or tepid conditions. The process may be modified by washing the pulp in a slightly alkaline bath after the second chlorination, then washing with water, steeping in a dilute acid solution or chlorinated water, and finally washing again. The fibres may be preliminarily loosened by decorticating, soaking, teasing, &c.
