Abstract

Natural cellulose fibre is reacted with formaldehyde to produce aldehyde-cellulose, and the formaldehyde is then replaced by water to form a hydrated cellulose. The first reaction may be effected by the use of hot aqueous formaldehyde, which also assists in the removal of the natural gums and waxes on washing. A detergent such as a neutral soap or borax may also be added to the bath. The second step may be effected by the use of an oxidizing agent, e.g. sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, a dichromate or permanganate, or directly as aldehyde, e.g. by means p of hydrochloric acid. The process may be followed by bleaching, and may be applied to fibres, filaments, yarns and fabrics, including fabrics containing skein-dyed yarns.
