Abstract

412,470. Refining bast fibres. PALAZZO, F. C., and PALAZZO, F., 34, Via Montebello, Florence, Italy. Oct. 20, 1933, No. 29065. Convention date, Aug. 10. [Class 120 (i).] In a process for refining bast fibres such as hemp, nettle and flax, the raw fibrous material is first subjected at ordinary temperatures for 4-8 hours to the action of chlorine water containing about 0À25 per cent of chlorine, and is then treated for 1 to 4 hours at 1 to 3 atmospheres pressure with an alkali sulphite solution containing besides 0À5 per cent of sodium sulphite either 0À5 per cent of sodium carbonate or 0À5 per cent of sodium hydroxide, and is finally bleached first in a feebly alkaline hypochlorite solution and secondly in a feebly acid bath of either sodium hypochlorite or potassium permanganate, followed with a dilute solution of sulphurous acid. The bleaching may be effected on a roughly carded product or even on the finished yarn instead of on the fibrous material, the finished yarn being first scoured if saponifiable oils have been added during the spinning operation.
