Abstract

101,475. Cataldi, B. Sept. 11, 1915, [Convention date]. Pulp, preparation of.-In the extraction of cellulose from vegetable fibres, such as wood, cotton, straw, esparto grass, jute, &c., the material is cut up, crushed, or otherwise reduced by known machines, introduced into digesters having acid-proof linings, and there treated with dilute alkali. After treatment, the material is drained, the pressure within the digester is reduced to 50-65 cm., and chlorine is introduced until the pressure is again normal. The material is then left for from one to several hours and then washed and again treated with dilute alkali for a slightly shorter period, after which it is washed and then refined; the bleaching may be effected with hypochlorite of lime or soda. In treating cotton, jute, &c., water is removed by a hydroextractor before treatment with chlorine gas.
