Abstract

The bleaching of textile and other fibres of vegetable origin, e.g. flax, cotton, hemp, cardboard pulp, plywood or ordinary wood, with chlorine, followed by a dechlorination treatment with hydrogen peroxide, is preceded by a degumming operation in an alkaline bath containing an alkyl ester of an aryl monosulphonic acid or a halogen derivative thereof. The ester may be the nonyl ester of naphthalene mono-sulphonic acid or the nonyl or dodecyl ester of benzene sulphonic acid. The bleaching may be effected with an aqueous solution of calcium or sodium hypochlorite and the dechlorination solution may comprise hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium silicate. The ester may be added to a freshly prepared solution of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate or to a solution recycled from a previous dechlorination step in which case hydrogen peroxide may be present.ALSO:The bleaching of textile and other fibres of vegetable origin, e.g. flax, cotton, hemp, cardboard pulp or plywood, with chlorine, followed by a dechlorination treatment with hydrogen peroxide, is preceded by a degumming operation in an alkaline bath containing an alkyl ester of an aryl mono-sulphonic acid. The alkaline bath may be a freshly made solution of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate or a solution recycled from a previous dechlorination step. The ester may be the nonyl ester of naphthalene monosulphonic acid, the nonyl or dodecyl ester of benzene sulphonic acid or a halogen derivative of an alkyl ester of an aryl mono-sulphonic acid. The bleaching may be effected with sodium or calcium hypochlorite, and the dechlorination bath may also contain sodium silicate and sodium carbonate.
