Abstract
526,109. Refining cellulosic materials. CELEC CORPORATION, Ltd., and TOWNSEND, C. Feb. 9, 1939 No. 4291. [Class 2 (ii)] Fibrous cellulosic materials are boiled in a solution containing in admixture from 5 per cent. of an alkali, from 2¢ per cent. of a substance having reducing properties, and about 1 per cent. of a wetting agent, for the purpose of separating the cellulose from non-cellulosic ingredients. The materials may then be subjected to an oxidizing bleach treatment. Sawdust, flax, hemp, ramie, or linseed straw may be treated. Caustic soda, or potash, or sodium or potassium carbonate, or lime may be used as the alkali.. Sodium sulphite, bisulphite, hydrosulphite, or metabisulphite may be used as reducing substance. Sulphonated castor oil may be used as wetting agent. The materials may be subjected to one or more boiling treatments. The solution after use may be used for extraction of. the resin dissolved therein. The materials may be subsequently boiled in a bleaching solution or allowed to soak in a warm or unheated solution containing soda ash and bleaching powder. Permanency to the bleaching may be given by treatment with a solution of hydrochloric acid. The process is suitable for preparing fibres for the textile industry or for obtaining paper pulp, or for use in the production of explosives, plastics, or artificial silk. Specification 501,485 is referred to.
