Abstract

Cellulose fibre is treated with caustic soda solution containing oxidant in sufficient amount to cause reduction of the solution viscosity of the pulp to a value below 1,0 and the treatment is continued for a sufficient period of time to yield a fibre having an alpha cellulose content of 87-93 per cent, a b -cellulose content of 6-12 per cent and a viscosity of less than 1,0. The product can be used for the manufacture of viscose by simple admixture with caustic soda solution and carbon disulphide. The amounts of caustic soda and water are preferably such as to yield a viscose containing about 6 to 10 per cent each of caustic soda and cellulose. In an example, bleached sulphite pulp is treated at a consistency of 4-10 per cent with a solution of caustic soda of upwards of 6 per cent strength containing an oxidant, e.g. 8-15 per cent of sodium hypochlorite. The treatment is carried out at 35-45 DEG C. for 2-4 hours, after which it is washed. The product may be converted directly to viscose using, for example, the one-step process described in Specification 468,993. In another example, pulp chips consisting of pulp having 90 per cent of alpha cellulose, 9 per cent of b -cellulose, 2 per cent of g -cellulose and a solution viscosity of 0,3, are wetted with 16 per cent caustic soda solution in amount to provide the chips with a cellulose-caustic soda ratio of 7 to 6. The chips are then disintegrated, e.g. in the apparatus described in Specification 474,707, [Group II], and the salve-like mass is treated with 33 per cent of carbon disulphide and 0,01 per cent of pine oil calculated on the dry cellulose. The mass is mixed and water finally added to give a viscose containing 7,4 per cent of cellulose and 6,7 per cent of caustic soda. The xanthation may be conducted in the presence of caustic soda solution of 20 per cent or greater strength, and the solution diluted to the required cellulose and caustic soda content. The Specification describes in detail a method for determining the "filterability" of viscose solutions. Specification 475,925 also is referred to.
