Abstract

Cellulose to be converted into alkali cellulose is treated one or more times with the waste lyes from a preceding operation; and finally with fresh lye of mercerizing strength. Operating in this manner, the hemi-celluloses are more completely extracted, with the result that the viscose prepared from the alkali cellulose is of higher quality and the silk produced therefrom is of high strength and gloss; thus, by the process, it is possible to prepare viscose from celluloses which, by reason of their high hemi-cellulose content, could not otherwise be used. The process of treatment may be carried out on the counter current principle, or in a series of vessels arranged on the plan of a diffusion battery, or in centrifugal apparatus. After each treatment the lye may be brought to its original concentration as regards caustic alkali.
