Abstract
Removal of the excess carbon disulphide is effected in the manufacture of viscose only after the dissolution process: the mass of cellulose xanthate resulting from the reaction of the alkali cellulose with the carbon disulphide is subjected to prolonged and vigorous kneading with the dilute lye used to effect solution whereby the portions of the mass not completely acted on are brought into intimate contact with the carbon disulphide that remains. The several stages of the process are conveniently carried out in a single kneading machine, and the excess of carbon disulphide is finally withdrawn by the application of a vacuum, stirring being continued during this stage of the process.
