Abstract
A cellulosic yarn or thread is subjected to treatment with water under pressure at a temperature above 100 DEG C., after which it is dried, twisted, and then subjected to a steaming operation to set the twist. The treatment with water stabilizes the yarn towards the steam treatment so that the latter will not appreciably affect the dyeing affinity of the yarn. A yarn of substantially even dyeing properties is thus obtained in spite of variations in the intensity of the steam treatment over different portions of the yarn such as may occur when steaming the yarn on bobbins. The treated yarn may be knitted or woven into fabrics. A little soap or other alkaline softening agent may be added to the water in which the yarn is treated. The process is applicable to yarns of cotton or of regenerated cellulose. In an example cakes of bleached, desulphurized but undried viscose artificial silk are placed in water in an autoclave and the temperature is raised to 120 DEG C. After 15 minutes the cakes are removed and dried. The yarn is wound on to bobbins and then twisted. The twisted yarn is then steamed to set the twist.
