Abstract

Oxidation products of cellulose containing carboxyl groups are obtained by treating cellulose with a mixture containing aqueous nitric acid of a strength of 50-70 per cent. by weight and 3 to 25 per cent. by volume of concentrated sulphuric acid, the mixture also containing an alkali-metal nitrite. The cellulose, e.g. cotton linters, wood-cellulose, regenerated cellulose, cotton fibres, threads or fabrics, linen or paper, is impregnated, sprayed or kneaded with the mixture at room temperature up to 40 DEG C., the product being finally freed from acid, washed and dried, e.g. at 50 DEG -60 DEG C. The product is soluble in dilute alkaline liquids, and may be employed as a dispersing agent, an absorbable surgical dressing or an ion-exchange material, and in the form of a salt it may be employed to increase the dirt-carrying capacity of fatty acid soaps and synthetic washing agents. The products have a great affinity for basic dyestuffs.
