Abstract
Germicidal dressings, mull tissues, bandages, and the like are manufactured from fibrous materials such as cotton wool, wadding, or cellulose by impregnating them with compounds or products containing oxides of silver and manganese. Silver permanganate may be reduced or aqueous permanganate solutions reacted with silver or substances containing the same such as silver alloys. A product of the composition Ag2O. 2MnO2 is particularly efficient. The fibrous material may be impregnated with a solution containing silver nitrate and alkali permanganate, with reducing agents, if desired. Alternatively, the material is treated with a silver salt solution either before, after, or simultaneously with a reducing agent such as sugar, sulphites, formaldehyde, or sulphur dioxide. The two last may be employed as vapours or gases. The reduction may, however, be brought about by the action of cellulosic fibrous material. The product is then treated with permanganate solution. According to examples: (1) cotton wool or wadding is soaked in ammoniacal silver nitrate, then reduced in a solution of hydroquinone, washed, immersed in alkaline potassium permanganate at 50 DEG C., washed and dried; (2) cotton wool or wadding is immersed in a solution containing silver nitrate, ammonia, and potassium permanganate, and the product is wrung out, washed, and dried; (3) dressing mull is treated with dextrose solution, dried, immersed in ammoniacal silver nitrate, washed, and treated with permanganate as in (1).
