Abstract

Staple fibres are treated with a highly concentrated solution from which a roughening substance is deposited on to the surface of the fibres, said roughening substance being capable of ready removal without modification of the material of the fibres. The solution used may be a solution of the roughening substance itself, or the roughening substance may be precipitated from the solution by chemical means. According to a modification, the fibres may be subjected to the vapour of a sublimable substance. Examples of suitable roughening substances are substances capable of forming solutions of 10 per cent strength and upwards, for example, ammonium or barium chloride; barium, potassium, or sodium nitrate; aluminium, ammonium, iron, magnesium, potassium, or sodium sulphate; zinc sulphate; sodium carbonate and the carbonates and bicarbonates of potassium and ammonium; sodium phosphate; sodium hydrogen phosphate; sodium borate; the alums for example potash alum; boric acid; barium, calcium, and lead acetate; potassium and sodium oxalate; Rochelle salt; tartar emetic; naphthalene; benzoic, citric, phthalic, salicylic, and tartaric acids. Aqueous or organic, for example alcoholic solutions may be used. As an example of a substance which may be formed by chemical action, lead chloride is mentioned. The roughening substance is readily removed by means of the solvents by which they were applied; lead chloride may be removed by hot water. The process may be applied to fibres of all kinds, for example, fibres of cellulose esters or ethers, reconstituted cellulose such as viscose, nitrocellulose, and cuprammonium fibres, or natural silk fibres. The roughening substance may, if desired, be applied to the filaments from which the staple fibres are to be made. The amount of substance applied is comparatively small, for example 2 per cent or thereabouts of the weight of the fibres. The fibres so treated have a reduced tendency to slip during spinning.
