Abstract

352,681. Artificial mineral fibres and threads. LUDKE, W., 10, Storbeckstrasse, Stettin, Germany. June 13, 1930, No. 18148. [Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii).] Artificial, asbestos-like mineral fibres are obtained from water glass, ammonium silicate and similar soluble silicates and silicate mixtures bv spinning into suitable coagulating liquids and gases. The devices and processes used are such as are used in the artificial silk industry. To the silicate solutions may be added mineral salts, double salts, complex salts, and other compounds such as hydroxides. For producing aluminium silicate threads, sodium aluminate or other aluminium salt is added to the water glass. Magnesium silicate threads are similarly obtained with water glass and a magnesium salt. Calcium, tin, and zinc silicate threads are similarly obtained. Compound silicate threads may be obtained by the use of suitable mixtures such as water glass to which an aluminate and zinc oxide are added. The thread formation is facilitated by the addition also of such substances as sugar, dextrin, glucose, gum arabic and glycerine. Suitable salts, acid salts and acids may be used as precipitating baths, and a large variety of organic liquids, or their vapours, such as acetone, alcohols, phenols, esters, aldehydes, especially formaldehyde, acid chlorides, hydrocarbonates, or mixtures thereof with or without added acids or acid vapours may be used as coagulating means. Dry spinning may be effected in heated inert gases such as air, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Very thin threads are obtained by winding on bobbins under tension. The threads are subjected to a stabilizing process by heating in the presence of water or steam. Electrolytes may be used instead of pure water, or steam under pressure to which is added gases or vapours such as nitrogen, hydrogen, alcohol, &c. These liquids, gases or vapours may be circulated through the autoclaves in which the material is treated.
