Abstract
528,740. Cellulose derivatives. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and MORTON, T. H. April 4, 1939, No. 10506. [Class 2 (ii)] Cellulosic material is'subjected to treatment with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde containing a small proportion of an acid catalyst for a time less than 2 hours and at such a temperature that the reaction proceeds substantially to a state of equilibrium. The cellulose compound thus produced is separated from uncombined formaldehyde and acid catalyst and may then be subjected to drying. The proportion of the formaldehyde solution to the cellulose is at least such that the cellulose is always in a fully swollen state. When using a 40 per cent. formaldehyde solution containing sulphuric acid sufficient to give a normal solution the reaction is carried out for about 10 minutes at 80‹C., or for 1 hour at 60‹C. When using decinormal sulphuric acid with 40 per cent. formaldehyde the time is about one hour at 80‹C. Washing, of the product may be effected first with cold and then with hot running water. The cellulosic material may be in the form of cotton linters, bleached woodpulp, or yarn or fabric prepared from natural or artificial fibres. The products obtained may contain 3-4 per cent. or more of combined formaldehyde. The products may be combined with nitrogenous compounds such as cyanamide and salts of tertiary bases, e.g. pyridine and triethanolamine. By heating the products in the presence of an acid catalyst under dehydrating conditions, products of increased wet strength, increased resistance to creasing, and reduced water imbibition are obtained. Specifications 25647/06, [Class 2], and 528,741 are referred to.
