Abstract

524,511. Dyeing textiles ; artificial silk ; resinous condensation products. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WHITTAKER, C. M., and WILCOCK, C. C. Jan. 31, 1939, No. 3262. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] The dyeing properties of cellulose textile materials, e.g. their affinity for direct, sulphur, vat, azoic, basic, acid, chrome and cellulose acetate dyestuffs, are improved by incorporating therein a product obtained by the interaction of cyanamide, formaldehyde and at least one phenolic compound selected from the group phenol, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, phloroglucinol, p-nitrophenol and salol. A dispersion of the product may be added to a solution from which textile threads are formed or the textile material may be impregnated with a solution containing the components of the product, e.g. a solution obtained by dissolving the phenolic compound in an aqueous solution of cyanamide, adding aqueous formaldehyde and adjusting the pH value of the solution to about 6.5, the impregnated material being hydro-extracted, and, preferably after being allowed to stand, dried below 100‹C. after the material has become alkaline and heated to render the condensation product insoluble in water. In examples, (1) regenerated cellulose staple fibre is treated for 10-minutes with a cold solution at a pH of 6.5, obtained by adding phenol to an aqueous cyanamide solution, heating for 1 hour at 80‹C., coding and adding aqueous formaldehyde and the treated fibre is hydro-extracted, dried below 100‹C. and heated for 15 minutes at 140‹C.; (2) regenerated cellulose staple fibre is treated for 10 minutes with a cold solution obtained by adding resorcinol to an aqueous cyanamide solution, then adding aqueous formaldehyde and sufficient caustic soda to adjust the pH to 6.5 and the treated fibre is hydro-extracted, dried and heated as in (1); (3) the fibre treated as in (1) or (2) is allowed to stand for 2 hours between the hydroextraction and the drying ; (4) to an aqueous solution containing cyanamide and resorcinol is added acqueous formaldehyde and sufficient caustic soda to adjust the pH to 10-11 and the precipitate is separated, dried, heated at 140‹C. and ground with water to a 20 per cent. paste which is diluted with glycerol to a 12 per cent solid content and injected into viscose as described in Specification 290,693, [Class 2 (ii)], the product is extruded into an acid ammonium sulphate bath as described in Specification 502,199, the resulting threads being washed and desulphurized. Specification 506,793 also is referred to.
