Abstract

A cigarette filter plug formed from fibrous material has at least a third of its individual fibres laid transversely of the plug. The fibres are preferably of cotton or viscose and may be bleached prior to formation of the web by chlorine treatment for about 30 minutes at a temperature not exceeding 24 DEG C., followd by rinsing, about 3 hours in a peroxide bath at 85 DEG C., passage through an acid bath, further rinsing, washing, and drying. The transverse arrangement of fibres may be effected by cross-laying a fibrous web on a carrier band or by causing a roller in a carding machine to reciprocate axially so as to cause transverse displacement of some of the fibres passing through the machine.
