Abstract

A wick manufacturing process particularly intended for use in the preparation of filters for tobacco smoke, comprising spinning filaments in 15 to 100 spinning positions from a spinning solution supplied by metering pumps driven by a common power unit, remove the spun filaments from all the positions mentioned and drive the filaments around driven rollers from a common source of force, whereby better spinning and removal uniformity is obtained, treat all the mentioned filaments with a non-toxic finishing agent that it imparts a low slip-tack relationship to the filaments, collect all the filaments together in the form of a band of filaments of substantially uniform width and thickness, apply a temporary antistatic liquid and softening to said uniform band, supplying the uniform band to and through a box of curling filler, with which it is communicated to said filaments by or at least 1.60 folds per cm, the curled wick resulting from said process being characterized in that it is free of kinks and is uniform through the wick and removing and packaging said kinked wick.
