The main cylinder 4 of a carding machine is mounted for axial reciprocation, preferably by a face cam 8 and follower 9. The frequency and/or extent of reciprocation may be continuously variable. A grid located beneath the main cylinder has a two-part metal body having upstanding formations with knife-edge profiles adjustable radially of the drum.
