In a cam system comprising a cam and cam follower, at least that portion of the cam surface which is operative during the major portion of the useful working stroke effected by the cam is curved so as to obtain under predetermined working conditions substantially the maximum permissible Hertzian pressure between the cam and the cam follower throughout the major portion of the useful working stroke. Differential equations for this condition are given in the Specification.
