Abstract
A textile material impregnated with an aqueous solution of a precondensate of melamine, urea or substituted urea and formaldehyde and squeezed to a pick-up of 80 to 100% by weight is passed through a fluidized bed of hot discrete solid particles of a hydrophilic material such as bentonite, chalk, china clay, or titanium dioxide whereby excess resin on the surface of the fabric is absorbed by the hydrophilic particles and the material is dried. The materials treated may be fibres, yarns, filaments, webs or fabrics of cotton, wool or rayon. The fluidized bed may be composed of bentonite, china clay, titanium dioxide or precipitated chalk. The resin precondensate may contain a catalyst, e.g. an ammonium, calcium, or magnesium salt of boric, tartaric or acetic acid or mono, di or triethanolamine hydrochlorides. The temperature of the bed may be from 90 DEG to 100 DEG C. and the material may be passed through a further fluidized bed at a temperature of 120 DEG to 190 DEG C. to cure the resin. In Example (1) a cotton fabric is impregnated with a solution containing a condensate of urea and formaldehyde, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, a softening agent and a dispersing agent, is squeezed, passed through a fluidized bed of bentonite particles at 120 DEG C., brushed and cured by passage through a fluidized bed of sand at 165 DEG C. and is then washed and dried.
