Abstract
Cellulosic fabrics are treated with an omegacarboxy alkyl urea having the formula NH2CONHRCOOH, in which R is an alkylene group, and the omegacarboxy alkyl urea polymerized in situ to form a wash-resistant resin. The omega-carboxy alkyl urea, which preferably has 5-10 carbon atoms in the alkylene chain, may be applied to the fabric in solution or suspension and the fabric then dried and heated to polymerize the acid, no acid polymerization catalyst being required since the omega-carboxy alkyl ureas are self-polymerizing under the action of heat. The omega-carboxy alkyl ureas also harden aminoplast resins and their precondensates, e.g. urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde and ethylene urea-formaldehyde resins, and cellulosic fabrics may be treated with a composition comprising an aminoplast resin or precondensate thereof and an omega-carboxy alkyl urea and the composition then hardened. Specification 913,713 is referred to.ALSO:The crease resistance and tensile strength of cellulosic fabrics, e.g. cotton and regenerated cellulose, are improved without greatly affecting their ability to absorb water by treating them with an omega-carboxyalkyl urea having the formula NH2CONHRCOOH, in which R is an alkylene group, and polymerizing the omega-carboxyalkyl urea in situ to form a wash-resistant resin. The omega-carboxyalkyl urea, which preferably has 5-10 carbon atoms in the alkylene chain, may be applied to the fabric in solution or suspension and the fabric then dried and heated to polymerize the acid, no acid polymerization catalyst being required since the omega-carboxyalkyl ureas are self-polymerizing under the action of heat. The omega-carboxyalkyl ureas also harden aminoplast resins and their precondensates, e.g. urea. Formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde and ethylene urea-formaldehyde resins, and cellulosic fabrics may be treated with a composition comprising an aminoplast resin or precondensate thereof and an omega-carboxyalkyl urea and the composition then hardened. Specification 713,713 is referred to.
