Abstract
The fibrillation properties of polypyrrolidone fibres are reduced and dye receptivity is modified by subjecting them to the action of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde producing compound in the presence of an acidic methylolation catalyst under non-solubilizing conditions and remaining water to effect cross-linking. Suitable formaldehyde producing compounds are paraformaldehyde, methylol urea, dimethylolethylene urea, dimethyl formal, formalin and hexamethylene tetramine and the acidic methylolation catalyst maybe 0.01N aqueous hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride, zinc-chloride, sodium bisulphite, ammonium sulphate, oxalic acid and very dilute formic acid. The formaldehyde and catalyst may be applied together from the same aqueous solution and the fibres dried at a slightly elevated temperature and heated at a temperature of 50 DEG -150 DEG C for 1-60 minutes. Alternatively the fibres may first be treated with the catalyst, dried to a water content of less than 10% by weight, and then exposed to gaseous or vaporous formaldehyde at 120 DEG -150 DEG C for 2-30 minutes. 0.1-10% by weight of formaldehyde may be combined with the fibres and the treated fibres may have a gel content, as defined, above 80%. The fibres may subsequently be washed with water for 10 seconds at 50 DEG C to remove acidic materials and then dried. Oriented, heat set fibres may be treated. Fibres in the form of mono-filaments, yarns, cords, threads or woven or non-woven fabrics alone or in admixture with cotton may be treated.
