Abstract

A step in the manufacture of loom-finished textile fabrics of natural or artificial threads comprises treating the thread with an aqueous solution containing (1) a water-soluble polymerization product of acrylamide or methacrylamide; (2) a methylol compound capable of forming a carbamide-type resin; and (3) a catalyst to accelerate the formation of such resin. The thread, after impregnation with this solution, is dried at a temperature below 100 DEG C. and then heat-treated at a temperature above 100 DEG C., and then heat-treated at a temperature above 100 DEG C., either before or after weaving. Materials so treated are said to be fast to washing and resistant to crimping. Suitable methylol compounds are the conversion products of urea, thiourea, melamine, guanidine or dicyandiamide with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-yielding compounds such as paraformaldehyde. As catalysts there may be used the ammonium salts of strong acids, or free organic acids such as lactic or glycollic acid. Examples are given.
