Abstract
Artificial wool is prepared from synthetic fibres of the viscose type, or from vegetable fibres, by treating the fibres with an alkaline solution, drying until they crinkle, bleaching, neutralizing the alkali, impregnating the fibres with a fatty acid which may be sulphonated, derived from wool grease, and finally drying the fibres. The various operations are preferably carried out in centrifuges equipped with perforated baskets. In treating jute fibres, for example, the fibres are first cut into lengths not exceeding 15 inches, treated with a cold bath of caustic soda of mercerizing strength, and dried in the centrifuge and rotary tumbler heated to 212 DEG F., then washed, dried, bleached with a customary bleaching agent such as alkaline hypochlorite, washed, neutralized with a weak solution of bisulphite and hydrochloric acid, washed, dried, and impregnated with a fatty acid (obtained from wool-grease) which is preferably sulphonated, and the fibres are finally centrifuged and dried. Other fibres specified include ramie, palmitic fibres, flax, cotton and grasses of the Tiliace family generally. The product is similar in appearance and properties to natural wool.
