Abstract
Artificial threads are obtained from solutions containing cellulose xanthate and a xanthate of a water-insoluble higher alcohol, alcohol-acid or ester thereof, or of a partially substituted water-insoluble derivative of a body of the type of polyvinyl alcohol. The xanthates may be derived from fat alcohols p such as lauryl, stearyl, or oleyl alcohol, or from polyhydric alcohols obtained by reduction of hydroxy-fatty acids. Partially esterified water-insoluble polyvinyl alcohols, such as polyvinyl acetates, butyrates, and oleates, or partially etherified or acetalized derivatives such as water-insoluble polyvinyl-formal may be used. By spinning the xanthate mixtures in acid precipitating baths there are obtained regenerated cellulose and a water-insoluble alcoholic body. The threads produced have improved softness, and suppleness with increased resistance to water. In examples, oleyl alcohol, octodecane-diol prepared by reduction of ricinoleic acid, and the mixture of primary alcohols obtained by reduction of the fatty acids of palm nut oil are converted into xanthates in known manner and mixed with solutions of viscose. The mixed xanthate solutions are spun in known manner. In another example, castor oil is converted into a xanthate and mixed with viscose which is then spun into a strongly acid precipitating bath. In other examples, a polyvinyl formal, polyvinyl acetate saponified to such a degree that it is still insoluble in water, and polyvinyl oleate containing free hydroxy groups, are treated with caustic soda and carbon disulphide and the xanthates are mixed with viscose solutions. The mixtures are spun with or without ripening.
