Abstract

Rods, tubes, sheets, and other shaped articles formed from moulded cellulose derivative compositions, are strengthened by gelatinizing the surface of the article by treatment with a solvent which is afterwards driven off. The solvent is applied as a liquid or as a vapour, and the time of treatment is of the order of one minute or more. The method is more usually employed with articles made by stuffing or extrusion processes; and it is particularly applicable to rods which have been finished to size by softening and then drawing through a die-plate or an apparatus as described in Specification 456,908, [Group V]. After removal from the solvent bath &c., the article may be seasoned at a high temperature, for example, at 110--290 DEG F., in order particularly to reduce heat shrinkage. The cellulose derivative may be nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate &c. or a cellulose ether; and the composition may contain plasticizers and the usual additions.ALSO:Rods, tubes, sheets, and other shaped articles formed from moulded cellulose derivative compositions, are strengthened by gelatinizing the surface of the article by treatment with a solvent which is afterwards driven off.
