Abstract

A process for the production of extensible contractile tubular annular or the like film-products, for example, caps or rings for stoppering bottles, having a base consisting of cellulose triacetate, comprises forming such products by a wet process from a solution of cellulose triacetate in a mixture consisting of glycol formal and a small proportion of water, and coagulating the shaped products with a mixture consisting of glycol formal and a large proportion of water. Preferably the glycol formal is used in association with plasticizers, e.g. triacetin or glycol diacetate. The maximum glycol formal content of the coagulating bath is about 15 per cent. An aqueous solution of glycol diacetate may be used as an after-treatment. In example 1 cellulose triacetate is dissolved at 40-50 DEG C. in a mixture of glycol formal with a little water, methyl glycol phthalate and " Plastomoll " (Registered Trade Mark), dye stuffs, fillers and the like being added, if required. Formers are dipped into this solution, drained off, and immersed at 20 DEG C., in a coagulating bath of a 14 per cent aqueous solution of glycol formal. They are then dipped in an after treatment bath consisting of a 12 per cent solution of glycol diacetate at room temperature. In example 2 glycol diacetate is added to the initial solution and the coagulation bath consists of an aqueous mixture containing 10 per cent of glycol formal and 12 per cent of glycol diacetate, thus dispensing with the after treatment. The after treatment in the first example and the coagulation in the second example may be carried out continuously. Specification 587,309 is referred to.
