Abstract
Lustrous filaments, yarns, bristles, straws and the like are produced from water-insoluble organic derivatives of cellulose by wet-spinning processes in which coagulation is conducted under such conditions that the formed materials contain a solvent or a latent solvent for the cellulose derivative, the formed materials being then heated. Thus, the cellulose derivatives solution may contain a substance which is a solvent or latent solvent for the derivative at ordinary or raised temperature, but is relatively insoluble in the coagulating bath; examples of such substances, when an aqueous coagulating bath is used, are methylene chloride, ethylene dichloride, triacetin, acetophenone, tetrachlorethane, and dibutyl tartrate. Any suitable solvent, however, may be used in preparing the spinning solution, and the coagulating liquid may be any non-solvent (for the cellulose derivative) that dissolves or is miscible with at least a part of the solvent; other specified solvents are acetone, chloroform, and mixtures of methyl or ethyl alcohol with methylene or ethylene chloride or dichlorethylene, and other specified coagulants are hydrocarbons such as benzene and its homologues and petroleum hydrocarbons. If ordinary spinning solutions are used, the retention of some of the solvent in the formed materials may be ensured by restricting the length of the path of the materials in the bath, and (or) by increasing the speed of spinning. The heating of the formed materials may be effected by bringing them into contact with heated feed rolls, pipes, rods or plates, or by passing them between pressure rolls, at least one of which is heated. The heat treatment may be applied directly after coagulation, or the filaments may first be wound or twisted and wound. The filaments may also be stretched during the process. According to the examples, (1) a solution of cellulose acetate in ethylene dichloride, methyl alcohol and triacetin is spun into an aqueous bath, and prior to winding the threads are passed around heated rolls; (2) a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone and acetophenone is spun as in example (1); (3) a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone and diethylene glycol is spun into a kerosene bath, and the filaments are heated as in example 1. Specifications 332,187 and 332,527, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) covers the application of the process to the manufacture of filaments &c. from cellulose derivatives generally, including cellulose nitrate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
