Abstract

Carboxylates.-In the manufacture of artificial silk by wet spinning using stretch spinning, very fine threads are obtained by employing as the spinning bath concentrated aqueous solutions of polyhydroxy compounds which are readily soluble in or miscible with water so that viscous, oily solutions of 30-60 per cent or more can be obtained. Carbohydrate such as grape sugar, cane sugar, invert sugar, or concentrated beet juice, molasses, vinasse, sulphite waste liquor, &c. containing about 50 per cent of solid substances may be used; or polyvalent alcohols, e.g. glycol or glycerol may be employed. Solvents or swelling agents may be added to the bath, e.g. for an acetone solution of acyl cellulose the bath may consist of 50 parts sugar, 38 parts water and 12 parts acetone; or for an acetic acid solution the bath may comprise 50 parts glycerol, 25 parts water and 25 parts glacial acetic acid. To improve lustre and ease of spinning, salts such as ammonium thiocyanate or nitrate, or calcium chloride may be added, e.g. for an acetone solution the spinning bath comprises 38 parts cane sugar, 15 parts ammonium thiocyanate, 37 parts water, and 10 parts alcohol.
