Abstract

The coloured syrup film is removed from sugar crystals by passing through the crystals, for example, placed in a cylindrical vessel, a washing liquid having substantially no solvent action on the crystals at such a rate that the part of the washing liquid which has absorbed the colouring film is separated from the clear part of the film by a clearly perceptible common surface. As washing liquids concentrated solutions of sugar of sufficiently light colour, or 80 per cent solutions of alcohol or acetone in water may be employed. Examples are given. The coloured syrup drained off at the top of the cylinder may be decolourized afterwards by heating with decolourizing charcoal and also, active infusorial earth. The crystals after washing may be separated from the colourless syrup remaining by centrifuging and are afterwards freed from water in a drying plant.
