Abstract

508,547. Cellulose ethers. JOHNS0N, G. W. (1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Dec. 30, 1937, No. 36121. [Class 2 (ii)] Materials soluble or capable of swelling in water, but insoluble in organic solvents, are produced by etherifying pretreated wood with inonohalogenacetic acids or their salts, e.g. mono-chloracetic acid or its sodium salt. The wood is pretreated with caustic soda solution at normal or increased pressure, in such a manner that the lignin, pentosan, and resin constituents are not substantially removed. In examples, a mixture of beechwood or pinewood sawdust and caustic soda solution is allowed to stand for several hours, if desired. under pressure. Monochloracetic acid, alone, or neutralized by caustic soda, is added and the mixture allowed to stand for some days at 20-25‹ C. The mixture is freed from salts and excess sodium hydroxide by extraction with a suitable solvent, e.g. ethanol or methanol, and if desired, the water soluble other carboxylic acid is separated by addition of dilute acids, e.g. acetic acid. Alternatively,. the reaction mixture is acidified with cone. hydrochloric acid, washed with water, and finally neutralized with ammonia or alkali hydroxide. Specification 343,521 is referred to.
