Abstract
Acetylation solutions suitable directly for spinning and for the manufacture of films, are prepared by treating cellulose with an acetylating mixture in the presence of a weak condensing agent in its ordinary, as distinct from its nascent condition, followed by a further acetylation in the presence of sulphuric acid or other strong condensing agent, the proportion of the latter as compared with the cellulose in no case exceeding 4 per cent and being preferably of about 0.7-0.8 per cent. Suitable weak condensing agents are chloracetic acids, acetyl sulphuric acid, alkylamines, aniline salts, methyl sulphonic acid, phosphorus trichloride, pyridine, alkyl sulphates, dimethylamine sulphate, and hydrochloric acid. Artificial silk and like filaments are prepared by squirting the solution into a coagulating bath, and films by applying a coating to a band partly submerged in coagulating liquid. The acetylation process is a development of those of Specifications 139,232 and 190,732.
