Abstract
309,053. Harrison, W. Nov. 1, 1927. Cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments from.-Strong threads are prepared from viscose by effecting the coagulation in strong or mineral acids of hydrion concentration less than that of 7 per cent sulphuric acid, preferably in the presence of neutral salts, and applying tension with gradually increasing stress to the threads while they are still in a nascent or active plastic state, so that they are extended at least 25 per cent. The duration of the nascent or active plastic state decreases as the hydrion concentration of the coagulating bath increases, and would normally be less than 30 seconds. It is found, however, that that state can be maintained for a longer time if the filaments are passed, immediately or very soon after their formation, into a second bath comprising an aqueous solution of neutral salts and/or organic substances such as sugar, glucose, or alcohol, with or without alkalies. The threads can then be stretched before entering the second bath and/or after leaving it. In one example, viscose of specified quality is spun under specified conditions into a bath comprising specified amounts of sodium and ammonium sulphates and sulphuric acid, and the filaments are passed, as soon as may be, on to a flat, cylindrical, or conical surface moving at a specified rate. and then over means for applying tension gradually. In a modification of the first example, the filaments leaving the bath pass into a solution of sodium sulphate which may contain alcohol, glucose, caustic soda, or ammonia, and stretching is applied at any time after the viscose is sufficiently set. Other examples are given in which the conditions are modified in various ways. The use of zinc viscose also is referred to.
